Country Overview: Mexico is at the southern extremity of North America and is bounded by the USA, the Gulf of California, the Pacific, Guatemala, Belize, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Mexico's geographical features range from swamp to desert, and from tropical lowland jungle to high alpine vegetation. Mexico City, rich in reminders of ancient civilisations, is also a modern developing city.

In Mexico, temples and cathedrals contrast with futuristic buildings, motorways and fully-equipped beach resorts. Cholula, 124km (77 miles) from Mexico City, is a pre-Hispanic religious centre containing more than 400 shrines and temples. The Pyramid of Tepanapa is the largest of all Mexican pyramids.

Acapulco, situated on Acapulco Bay, is probably the most famous beach resort in Mexico. The town stretches for over 16km (10 miles) round the bay. It has many beaches as well as numerous top-class hotels. There are many local specialities, such as turkey mole, a sauce containing several sorts of chilli, tomatoes, peanuts, chocolate, almonds, onions and garlic. Nightlife is vibrant and exciting, featuring international shows, jazz groups, rock groups, traditional Mexican music and dancing, Spanish flamenco dancers and gypsy violins.
